Why is SSA the preferred choice of sailing schools worldwide? We are the preferred choice for novice through experienced sailors worldwide because we specialize in individualized, custom training tailored to the student's specialized needs and learning curve. One obvious advantage to private instruction is that the instructor is free to concentrate exclusively on one student or couple. Both the lesson plan and its pace can be custom tailored to the individual. For some students, particularly those with time constraints or special learning needs, private instruction and hands-on experience are the ideal way to learn to sail. In a private lesson, the relationship between instructor and student is analogous to that of doctor and patient. A doctor examines a patient, makes a diagnosis, prescribes a course of treatment, then monitors and adjusts the therapy as the patient responds. Similarly, an instructor assesses a student's ability, maturity, and learning style, and makes a diagnosis as to what deficiencies need attention, prescribes and administers an appropriate lesson plan. Private instruction is also affordable. Our rates for private instruction carry a surcharge of 30% over group rates.

Our courses are designed to prepare the student to successfully challenge the certification standards for that particular skill level. Some of our students are able to pass the SSA practical skill requirements during course time. Many, however, require an additional Review Course or two before they are ready to challenge the Practical Checkout. No two students are alike. We all learn at our own pace. Those with previous boating experience can pick up the fundamentals more quickly than those without previous experience. While there are no guarantees, on average, students at our sailing school are ready to charter on their own after they complete six days of formal instruction plus an additional Review Course. *While certification provides a basis for chartering companies to evaluate a customer's competency, even with ASA or US Sailing certification many charter companies may require an on-the-water test of sailing skill (called a "practical checkout") before chartering. SSA Charter Certification is available to others who successfully challenge the Practical Checkout.

ST. AUGUSTINE SELECTED AS

" BEST TOURIST TOWN " IN THE SOUTH

ST. AUGUSTINE , March 20 - For the fourth consecutive year, the readers of FamilyFun magazine have selected St. Augustine , Florida , as the " Best Tourist Town " in the South.  Copies of the April issue featuring results of the magazine's annual " America 's Favorite Vacations" survey hit newsstands nationwide today.

Working with the independent research firm of Davidson-Peterson Associates, the staff of FamilyFun polled readers in five regions to rate the "family friendliness" of towns in their region to determine which one was an "absolutely must see" destination for visitors.  St. Augustine was selected as the clear winner in the South-a region stretching from Maryland through Louisiana .

"I think that this year, more than ever, parents will feel compelled to take to the road with their kids, making pilgrimages to America's greatest destinations," said Alexandra Kennedy, Editorial Director of FamilyFun.  "This invaluable survey is a must-have for families because it gauges the popularity of regional attractions by the people who know them best, local parents and readers."

In announcing the awards, FamilyFun said: "Ever since Ponce de Leon docked near here in 1513, St. Augustine has enjoyed a touch of Spanish flair - and our readers have fallen for it four years running.  Historic fort reenactments, the Fountain of Youth, the St. Augustine lighthouse, sandy beaches, and balmy weather are just some of the city's charms."

St. Augustine received a rating of 81 out of a possible 100 in the survey.  Its nearest Southern competitor was Annapolis, MD (76), followed by Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN (75) and Wilmington, NC (72).
